An afternoon with a shepherd

Cazalla de la Sierra, Sevilla

How to manage a flock of sheep?

What care do sheep require? How much does a cow eat? What makes the iberian pork so special? In this curious activity, we invite you to be part of a shepperd. You will go out with the sheep to the field, learning what grasses are the best and how to keep the herd together and move it from one place to another. Our heperd will explain you what cares do sheep require, how to prevent diseases and how to identify the individuals one by one. All this will take place in the unique environment of the meadows of the Sierra Norte de Sevilla, in an organic farm, so respecting the environment and just using the resources that nature offers.
Plus you'll see how they look after the cows, and learn about ecological management of the Iberian pig.

Information about the craftsman

Our young shepherd inherited his father's profession and he takes care of the cattle with his brother. He is passionate about the countryside and animals, so it is happy taking care of their sheep, (Merino breed native to the area), limousin cows and Iberian pigs. He will be delighted to welcome you and share with you all his knowledge of the field.

Information about the area

Cazalla de la Sierra is a beautiful white village located north of the province of Seville. In the city center you can visit several monuments such as the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación whose construction began in the XIV  century with a Mudejar style and later absorbed other styles, so now it has a curious mixture of Renaissance and Baroque. La Cartuja de Cazalla, located 5 km from the village, whose construction began in the s. XV is a magnificent example of the monumental buildings in which the Carthusian monks lived.
Cazalla has always been a village ahead of its time. Their neighbors called for the abolition of slavery, still present in the colonies until the end of s. XIX, of “quintas” (finally abolished in 2001) and the capital punishment (abolished in 1995).

Cazalla is included in the Natural Park of the Sierra Norte, a mid-mountain area with holm oaks, chestnut groves alternating with pine and elm forests. It is a nice area for hiking. Some of the best known and signposted routes are: the route of the Via Verde de la Sierra Norte, a former railway line running from the mining town of Cerro del Hierro to the train station Cazalla Los Prados, crossing the beautiful waterfall of Monumento Natural Cascadas del Huéznar.

It is also a good area for birdwatching, and it is not difficult to see rare species such as the imperial eagle, golden and Bonelli eagle, the rare black vulture and griffon vulture.

Inside the park, spread around several municipalities we can find Moorish castles, churches and chapels that shine at the tops of the mountains, and in Almaden de la Plata you can visit prehistoric remains.

The typical products of the area are the wines and anises, artisan sweets, olive oil and Iberian pork derivate products such as jamón serrano, chorizo and nice meat.
