Cordobanes y guadamecíes

Osuna, Sevilla

We invite you to learn about a leather centuries-old craft tradition.

These are Cordobanes and Guadamecíes, two techniques for leather working inherited from the Arabs. The cordobanes are used in everyday practical objects.

They are made with goatskin, thicker and moldable, that requires the skin to be manipulated from “behind”. The process begins making a mold on which the skin is moistened, and stretched until it takes the mold shape.

The guadameci, more used for luxury items, is done using cow leather from the front side, and is decorated with pigments, gold leaf or silver.

In this activity you will learn how to emboss leather with your own hands. Our artisans will also offer a little insight into the history of the leather and the influence it has had in our daily lives.

You can make your own piece and take it home as a souvenir.

Information about the craftsman

The workshop was funded in 1995 in Sepúlveda (Segovia) where our hosts lived then. They are a kind couple that loves craft. The character and style of both were complementary and so they joint their capabilities through the entire process, from initial design to finishing the work. From 2008 there are two young people who continue with the philosophy of the founders. They expanded the facilities and work hard to integrate the raditional cordovan with more innovative tendencies. They promote their products by attending to international fairs and they focus their work to luxury decoration sector and those seeking an exclusive and personalized product. The only restraint is the imagination ...

Information about the area

Osuna is located in the heart of Andalusia, in the Sevillian countryside, a beautiful landscape of olive groves and cereal fields.

Its history goes back 3,000 years ago, according to the prehistoric remains found that tells us about a civilization where Oriental and Greek cultures lived toguether. Later, it was populated by Romans, Muslims, and reconquered by Ferdinand III in 1240. Strategically located in the heart of Andalusia, Osuna becomes an important location for the defense of the border with the Moorish kingdom of Granada, also known as Moorish Band.

One of the monuments to visit in Osuna is the Colegio-Universidad de la Purísima Concepción. This University hosted four faculties: Medicine, Theology, Law and Arts.

In Osuna there are many worthwhile visits, as “La Colegiata or the “Insigne Iglesia Colegial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción”, in the Plaza de la Encarnación. It is a sober and spectacular architectural complex, built with stones from the quarry of Osuna.

Another nice place to visit is Las Canteras, where the Romans extracted stone, the Roman necropolis, (free of charge), or the Arco de la Pastora in its neoclassical style.

Osuna has a rich gastronomy, and we invite you to enjoy a variety of local dishes: pork, repapadillas, ardoria, ursaonés, baked beans and peas, boiled tagarninas, San Arcadio porridge, brown biscuits and many more delicious specialities.
